RESUMO

AIM: This study was aimed at investigating the educational experiences of international nursing students in Turkey. BACKGROUND: Nursing education has now gained an international dimension, which creates an environment where students from different cultures come together. In Turkey, nursing education is expanding internationally due to the increasing number of international students. DESIGN: A descriptive- phenomenological qualitative study. METHODS: The study data were collected from nursing students who came to Turkey from 17 different countries between April 2023 and July 2023 to study at a nursing faculty in Turkey using a semi-structured interview form. Of these students, 27 constituted the study sample. The data collected were analyzed using the content analysis. The COREQ checklist was used in reporting the study. RESULTS: Four themes emerged: a) challenges, b) gains, c) support needs and d) recommendations. Among challenges reported by the participating students were language barriers, cultural adjustment issues and lack of social support. As for the gains of being a foreign student, they stated that they experienced intercultural interaction and improved their language skills, independence and self-confidence. In the study, the need for language support, provision of psychological assistance and cultural adaptation support for these students and the importance of practical recommendations such as mentoring programs and orientation trainings to improve their educational experience were emphasized. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, in this study, the importance of targeted strategies in nursing education in areas such as language support, psychological assistance and cultural adaptation was emphasized, which helps international students to have a successful educational experience. It was also concluded that mentoring programs and orientation trainings could enrich the educational processes of students by facilitating their adaptation to their new environment. This study is notable in the literature in that students from 17 diverse countries share the same program and the same prerequisites.

RESUMO

The study was cross-sectional research that surveyed 410 nurses and midwives from March 2020 to March 2021 in Turkey. The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge and attitudes of nurses and midwives towards recognizing violence against women. The "Scale for Nurses' and Midwives' Recognition of the Symptoms of Violence against Women" were used. The average total scale score was 20.3 ± 3.2. The score of participants who are receiving postgraduate education, working in the field of gynaecology and obstetrics, and considering intervention as a professional responsibility when encountering a woman who has experienced violence was found to be significantly higher than the other groups (p<.05). It is important for midwives and nurses to be aware of signs of violence to identify violence against women. Providing education to midwives and nurses regarding signs of violence against women will contribute to the recognition, prevention, and awareness of violence.

This study aims to determine contraceptive intentions of pregnant women in the third trimester. This cross-sectional study was conducted at a training and research hospital in Mardin province between March 2023 and May 2023. In total, 253 pregnant women who had the ability to communicate in Turkish and agreed to participate were included in the study. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using a survey and the Contraceptive Intent Questionnaire (CIQ). The average age of the participants was 28.87 ±â€…5.35 with 30.8% of them holding a secondary school degree. It was found that there was a statistically significant difference in terms of CIQ score between categories of the following descriptive variables: education level, husband's/partner's education level, fertility plan, receiving family planning counseling during pregnancy, and paying for the contraceptive methods used (P = .046, P = .013, P < .001, P = .008, and P < .001 respectively). It was determined that pregnant women who had not received family planning counseling during pregnancy and paid for the contraceptive method had higher contraception intention.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effects of autologous serum (AS) and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) on human corneal endothelial cell (HCEC) proliferation and apoptosis in comparison to Y-27632 as the commonly studied Rho-associated kinase (ROCK) inhibitor. METHODS: The human corneal endothelial primary cell line was used for this study. As the treatment groups, HCECs were incubated with AS, PRP, and Y-27632, whereas the control group received no treatment. Cell proliferation (measured by 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine [BrdU] incorporation) and apoptosis (based on the caspase-3 level) were compared between the control, Y-27632, AS, and PRP groups. RESULTS: In the Y-27632, AS, and PRP groups, the ratios of BrdU-incorporated cells were significantly higher (115±0.2%, 125±0.2%, 122±0.4% at 24 hr, and 138±2.4%, 160±0.2%, 142±0.2% at 48 hr, respectively) than in the control group (100±18.4% at 24 hr, 100±1.1% at 48 hr) ( P <0.05 for all). Furthermore, AS provided a higher HCEC proliferation ratio compared with the Y-27632 group at 24 and 48 hr ( P <0.05 for all). Caspase-3 was significantly lower in the AS group (60.3±3.3%) than in the control (100±2.3%), Y-27632 (101.9±5.2%), and PRP (101±6.8%) groups ( P <0.05 for all). CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study demonstrated for the first time that AS and PRP promoted HCEC proliferation and AS significantly decreased apoptosis in HCECs. A superior effect on HCEC proliferation was also observed with AS compared with Y-27632. Future "autologous" regenerative therapeutic options for corneal endothelial failure may involve the utilization of AS and PRP owing to their accessibility, simplicity in preparation, immunologic compatibility, and donor-free nature.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: This study examines the subjective experiences of Turkish students who work in immigrant health facilities providing nursing care to people of different cultures. Nurses are often encountered by immigrants in these centers. Although qualitative research on nurses' experiences assisting immigrants has been often cited in the literature, the literature on nursing students' experiences is limited. METHODOLOGY: The study has a descriptive qualitative design. Data were collected using a face-to-face, in-depth, and semistructured interview form. The data were evaluated using a content analysis method. RESULTS: The study yielded four themes: (a) inability to control emotions, (b) barriers to care involvement, (c) benefits of intercultural care, and (d) recommendations. DISCUSSION: Learning intercultural care is critical in these years of increased immigration. Understanding nursing students' experiences is essential for improving the quality of intercultural care.

RESUMO

Osteocytes play an important role as regulators of both osteoclasts and osteoblasts, and some proteins that are secreted from them play a role in bone remodeling and modeling. LPS affects bone structure because it is an inflammatory factor, despite verbascoside's potential for bone preservation and healing. Osteocytes may also be involved in the control of the bone's response to immunological changes in inflammatory situations. MLO-Y4 cells were cultured in either supplemented -MEM alone with a low serum to inhibit cell growth or media with LPS (10 ng/mL) and/or verbascoside (50 g/mL) to show the LPS effect. In our research, LPS treatment increased RANKL levels while decreasing OPG and RUNX2 expression. Treatment with verbascoside reduced RANKL expression. In our work, verbascoside increased the expression of OPG and RUNX2. In MLO-Y4 cells exposed to verbascoside, SOD, CAT, and GSH activities as well as the expression levels of bone mineralization proteins like PHEX, RUNX2, and OPG were all elevated.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Osteoporosis is a major health problem that is very common worldwide and is characterized by both low bone density and deterioration in bone quality. New treatment options without side effects have become an active area of research in recent years. This study was designed to investigate the preventive effects of resveratrol on bone quality deterioration caused by ovariectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty rats were randomly divided into five groups (12 animals per group): Control, Sham-operated (SHAM), ovariectomized (OVX), OVX + Resveratrol-40 mg/kg/day (OVX + Res40), OVX + Resveratrol-80 mg/kg/day (OVX + Res80). Resveratrol was administered by oral gavage (40 and 80 mg/kg/day) for ten weeks. Micro-CT measurements, biomechanical testing, Raman spectroscopy analysis, and RT-PCR analysis were performed. ALP, OCN, TAS, and TOS levels were also measured from blood serum. RESULTS: Bone strength, bone volume/total volume, trabecular volume, and trabecular thickness were higher in the OVX + RES-80 group than in the OVX group. Resveratrol increased osteogenic differentiation, as the expression of osteogenic markers ALP, Col1A1, Runx2, OPG, OCN increased in both OVX + RES-80 and OVX + RES-40 groups compared to the OVX group. 80 mg/kg/day resveratrol administration decreased the levels of ALP, OCN and TOS in ovariectomized rats. Raman spectroscopy findings showed a preventive effect of resveratrol administration against ovariectomy-induced deterioration in biophysiochemical properties of bone tissue. CONCLUSION: This study revealed that administration of different doses of 80 mg/kg/day and 40 mg/kg/day of resveratrol had protective effects on bone quality deterioration caused by ovariectomy.

RESUMO

The aim was to determine the experiences of Turkish midwives and nurses when caring for families with perinatal loss. It was a descriptive and qualitative study. One-to-one interviews were conducted with ten midwives and five nurses using a semi-structured interview form. It was found that the nurses and midwives experienced pain and grief during caring for women who had perinatal losses, and they tried to relieve these feelings by using positive thinking and prayer. The nurses and midwives stated that they were unsure how to approach women or family experiencing perinatal loss, and they needed mentoring and training. The results showed that it would be beneficial to plan training for nurses and midwives and to conduct mentoring for those experiencing difficulties. For nurses and midwives frequently facing perinatal loss, there will be benefit in planning grief care training at regular intervals and mentoring for those experiencing difficulties.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Src family tyrosine kinases play a potential role in Bcr-Abl-induced leukemogenesis. Src kinase inhibitors are reported as selective inhibitors of chronic myeloid leukemia. OBJECTIVE: Since Src kinase inhibitors have an inhibitive effect on chronic myeloid leukemia, indole derivatives (C-1, C-2, C-3) previously found as potent inhibitors of Src kinase were tested against chronic myeloid leukemia in this study. METHODS: Cell viability of K562 and R/K562 cells, antiproliferative and antioxidant effects, and inhibition profiles of Bcr-Abl kinase of indole derivatives were determined compared to dasatinib and imatinib. RESULTS: The results showed that compounds affected cell proliferation and decreased the levels of Bcr/Abl. These results confirmed that the antileukemic activity of compounds was related to Bcr/Abl expression. Docking studies also presented that compounds are inhibitors of both Src and Abl kinases. Calculation of drug-like properties showed that compounds could be potential drug candidates. CONCLUSION: Among indole-2-on derivatives, previously identified as Src kinase inhibitors, C-2 has been discovered to be a strong anticancer drug that is active against susceptible and resistant K562 cell lines and induces apoptosis.

RESUMO

Calcium (Ca2+) signaling is the first messenger signal exhibited by osteocytes. The present study aimed to better understand the link between Ca2+ concentration, and the levels of bone mineralization regulator proteins [phosphateregulating neutral endopeptidase on chromosome X (PHEX), matrix extracellular phosphoglycoprotein (MEPE) and dentin matrix protein 1 (DMP1)] and the levels of oxidative stress in osteocytes. The viability of MLOY4 cells was determined using the live/dead assay following treatment with various Ca2+ concentrations (1.8, 6, 12, 18, 24 and 50 mM) for different durations (15 and 60 min, and 24 h). Superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione (GSH) and NADPH oxidase (NOX) enzymes were analyzed using a colorimetric method. Apoptosis was detected by caspase3 analysis. Furthermore, the protein expression levels of PHEX, MEPE and DMP1 were analyzed using immunoblotting, and oxidative stress was examined using the total antioxidant and total oxidant status (TOS) assay. Notably, after 15 min, there were more live cells than dead cells; however, after 60 min, the number of dead cells was increased following treatment with 24 and 50 mM Ca2+. After 24 h, there were more dead cells than live cells following treatment with 50 mM Ca2+. After 24 h of Ca2+ treatment, the highest protein expression levels of PHEX, MEPE and DMP1 were measured in cells treated with 24 mM Ca2+. In addition, as Ca2+ concentration increased, the TOS and the oxidative stress index values were also increased. In conclusion, these results suggested that 24 mM Ca2+ may trigger bone mineralization proteins, such as PHEX, MEPE and DMP1, and could be considered an applicable dosage for the treatment of bone damage in the future.

RESUMO

Verbascoside (Verb) may exhibit potential antitumour activities in leukaemia. The present study investigated the effect of Verb, in combination with imatinib (IM), dasatinib (Das), lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and TNF, on cell survival, Abl expression, apoptosis, oxidative stress and the MAPK pathway in chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) cells. Cell viability was determined using the WST-8 assay in K562 and R-K562 cells treated with Verb and/or IM, Das, LPS and TNF. Apoptosis and DNA damage in CML cells was detected by caspase-3 and comet analysis. The protein levels of Abl (Phospho-Tyr412), and total/phosphorylated p38, JNK and ERK in CML cells were analysed using a Colorimetric Cell-Based Assay. Oxidative stress was examined using total antioxidant and oxidant status assays. Treatment with Verb and/or tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), LPS and TNF resulted in a significant decrease in the Tyr-412 phosphorylation of Abl in K562 and R-K562 cells. In addition, cotreatment with Verb and IM or Das additively induced apoptosis by activating caspase-3 levels in both cell lines. Activation of p38 and JNK can result in growth arrest and cell death, whereas ERK stimulation results in cell division and differentiation. The present study demonstrated that cotreatment with Verb and TKIs suppressed phosphorylated-ERK1/2, whereas the levels of phosphorylated-p-38 and phosphorylated-JNK were significantly elevated by Verb and/or IM, Das, LPS and TNF, thus suggesting that Abl and Src inhibition could be involved in the effects of Verb on MAPK signalling in R-K562 cells. Furthermore, Verb elevated reactive oxygen species levels additively with TKIs in both cell lines by increasing the oxidant capacity and decreasing the antioxidant capacity. In conclusion, anti-leukemic mechanisms of Verb may be mediated by Abl protein and regulation of its downstream p38-MAPK/JNK pathway, caspase-3 and oxidative stress in CML cells.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To review 20 years of experience of the removal of intra-abdominal intrauterine devices (IUDs) and to compare the surgical methods used. METHODS: In a retrospective study, charts dating from between September 1, 1992, and August 31, 2012, were reviewed. Patients were eligible for inclusion when they had an IUD surgically removed by minilaparotomy or laparoscopy at a tertiary referral center in Izmir, Turkey. RESULTS: Among the 36 eligible women, 18 (50%) had undergone laparoscopy and 18 (50%) had undergone minilaparotomy. Mean operation length was 55.3±6.3 minutes in the laparoscopy group and 29.1±4.2 minutes in the minilaparotomy group (P=0.008). Conversion to full laparotomy was necessary in 4 (22%) women in the laparoscopy group and 1 (6%) in the minilaparotomy group (P=0.02). Perioperative complications were observed in 5 (14%) women, with no difference in frequency between groups (P=0.09). Total cost of medical/surgical procedures was US$436.4±35.4 for the laparoscopy group and $323.4±21.3 for the minilaparotomy group (P=0.04). CONCLUSION: Minilaparotomy seems to be an important alternative to laparoscopy for the removal of intra-abdominal IUDs. This procedure should be an integral part of gynecologic surgical training.
